Coaxial Cable

Coaxial cable or also known as coax is a type of electrical cable that is composed of 4 separate layers. This copper-based wire cable has a thin wire conductor surrounded by a tubular protecting layer enclosed by a tubular conducting shield. On top of this covering is a fine wire mesh giving another layer of insulation and protection from outside interference. The last and external layer of the coaxial cable is an additional rubber layer, providing the final means of insulation. The cable’s both ends have a small segment of copper that can be turned into the receiving electronics.

The name coaxial comes from the internal conductor and the outer protection sharing a geometric axis. This type of cable was invented by the English engineer, mathematician, and physicist Oliver Heaviside, who registered the design in 1880.

Coaxial Cable Uses

The critical element to the coaxial cable’s success has been its protected design, which enables the cable’s copper core to transmit data instantly, without being affected by interference or damage from environmental circumstances.

Coaxial cables have multiples uses, but they are mainly used for visual and audio functions. Contemporary homes are generally equipped with at least one coaxial wire wall socket in each room, and that’s because cable company providers typically utilize coaxial cables to supply cable television to their clients. Coaxial cables can be directly connected from the wall socket straight to the customer’s TV. Additional use of coaxial cables is connecting some gadgets and devices to a television.

Another use of the coaxial cable is attaching a personal antenna to a tv set or digital converter box.

Benefits

Coaxial cables are usually used by telephone companies, cable companies, and internet providers around the world to transmit video, data, and voice communications to clients. It has also been used widely within residences. They offer many benefits compared to other types of transmission lines. Here are some of the benefits coaxial cables offer:

  • The principal advantage of using a coaxial cable is that most electronic devices you use every day are compatible with coaxial cables.
  • They are popular in Local Area Networks in industrial settings, mainly because of their resistance to signal interruption from machines and other electronic equipment.
  • Coaxial cable includes its ability to protect your television from outside interference. This helps to maximize picture quality and avoid static.
  • They operate well at high frequencies.
  • Coaxial cables are cheap.
  • They are usually used when there is reduced attenuation.
  • They are utilized in almost every single house for cable television connections.

Disadvantages

Even though coaxial cables offer a lot of benefits, they are not perfect. One of the most significant disadvantages of coaxial cables is its size; they are bulky and can’t be made smaller, which means that only one size of coaxial wires exists. Apart from bulkiness, coaxial cables can be hard to install. Taking off the cable can also be a problem and takes a significant amount of time, and might even require a tool such as a wrench.

Despite its limitations, coaxial cables are the best option of its type available on the market.
